Stickin’ it to the man and treasure hunting

Gah… I just want a normal week. I’m not going to get that for about 10 days.
Maybe.
Lots of cool and frustrating stuff going on all at once. Here’s 2 very cool things though…
I’ve been totally stickin’ it to the man… especially today. I ran to work… Diane picked me up… and then Cam and I [...]

Feeling frisky, VERY frisky :)

I get like this anywhere from 12 to 18 months at a time. I feel the need to evaluate my ministry and make improvements. It’s always a good thing but it’s frustrating finding the time to do a proper evaluation and make changes. I get VERY impatient when I know for sure something needs improved.
Here’s [...]

Why don’t we know this?

This came out of my junior high Sunday school yesterday. We were talking about Ruth and faithfulness. I pointed out how Ruth was David’s Great Grandmother and thus an ancestor of Jesus.
A kid named Travis asked about Jesus having brothers or sisters. The discussion eventually led to the question:
Why don’t we know who the descendants [...]

Time to cut demand

On my way to junior high youth group last night I noticed the price of gas was $3.55 near the corner of Sterretania and West 38th.
This has prompted some changes in our house.
I was wondering how high gas would have to go before we would end up making some serious lifestyle changes. Guess $3.55 is [...]

The Sex Retreat has come and gone…

I’ve written about our Great Sex Weekend for senior highs several times here and wanted to give a brief report.
A few general observations…
-We don’t talk about sexuality enough with students. Not even close. Kids were shocked (in the best way) at what they were hearing. The interest level during the talks was more intense than what [...]

How not to debate

So I’m done running Presque Isle. I did a little over a half a marathon, 13.2 miles or so, 3 days in a row. I didn’t pick the best week to go for 5. I’ll try again this summer when things slow down.
Tomorrow I’ll settle for and hour on Jacob’s Ladder and find some other [...]

How did we get the Bible?

I’ve had some conversations about this over the past week and thought I’d post some links to some stuff by Mark Driscoll.
Revelation: God Speaks sermon
Pastoral Reflections on Bible Translations: Why We Preach From The English Standard Version
You can get a podcast of the sermon here.

Running all week

To break things up this week I’m going to try running the Presque Isle loop everyday Monday-Friday. It’s a 13.2 mile loop.
This will up my weekly mileage well over what you’re supposed to increase by to prevent injury and other bad things.
I’m betting I can take it though.
I think it’s a reaction to cabin fever.

Plan B

Today we did ministry on God’s time.
Which is wonderful and unpredictable and leaves you glad you woke up this morning.
Give it a try when the chance arises.
You’ll know it when it comes because you’ll want to stick to plan A and blow off plan B.

What I learned today

Leadership gurus that give us advice on how to become great leaders, often suggest taking time at the end of a day to recall what all you may have learned.
Today I learned 2 invaluable tidbits that I will never forget.
2 hours is at least 30 minutes and probably 1 hour too long to host a [...]
